The rooms in many older homes are separated by narrow door openings or archways. Newer homes feature more open floor plans, meaning you can stand in one room and see into large portions of two or three others. Color continuity is the key to connecting all these spaces. But continuity doesn't mean endless repetition of the same color scheme in every room. It does, however, mean creating a smooth color flow from one to the next. One connecting color can often accomplish the effect you're looking for when used in varying degrees of intensity. For example, a connecting color might be the primary wall color in the first room, picked up as an accent wall color in the second room, repeated in the carpet or drapery in the third, in the fabric of an occasional chair in the fourth and so one. Balance is the key to keeping each space dynamic without the differences in light, textures, and contrasts in hues and patterns becoming too repetitive or distracting. The solution to creating a successful flow is to look at the separate spaces as a whole and tap into the basic elements of color, shape, scale, light, texture and pattern in each. That's where I can help. We'll choose three to five of your favorite colors, explore the complementary variations and saturations (strong, hue-rich "saturated" colors and the airier patina versions of the same colors and hues), and consider how you want to see them in the space. What color will be in the background or featured more prominently? Which colors will carry through from one room to the next? You might be ready for a change in furnishings, but we'll also look at the artwork, area rugs and furniture pieces you want to keep. Very often they'll feature a color that "matches" or perhaps you'll decide to reupholster a favorite chair or sofa. Besides its satisfying eye appeal, color continuity has one other advantage. Rearranging furnishings from room to room becomes a whole lot easier. If you're ready to pull it all together, please give me a call today for a complimentary consultation and let's get started! |
