Finding the Right Custom Window Treatment

When you enter a room for the first time, what catches your eye first? Most homeowners find their eyes drawn to creatively designed window treatments before anything else.

The wide variety of window shapes, styles, and sizes combined with the myriad of design choices can make finding the right window treatment a daunting task. Working with Decorating Den Interiors makes it easy by drawing on our experience, expertise and access to the newest and most innovative solutions from the top suppliers of drapery fabrics, shutters, shades and blinds.

Your first decision is to recognize what you want your window covering to accomplish. Would you like to showcase a wonderful outdoor landscape or mask an unsightly view?  Basic light, privacy needs and window operation must also be taken into consideration.

After you’ve determined what your window treatment will do, consider the theme or style of the room; casual, contemporary, traditional, or trendy. Once you’ve defined your style, think “out of the box” for hardware needs.  For example, in a family room with a casual sports theme, consider using golf clubs or even pool cues as hardware for draperies. In a trendy or contemporary room, perhaps a high-tech, quasi-industrial look of cable wires for drapery hardware will dramatically enhance your design.

In some instances, you may even choose to create a window where one doesn’t currently exist, such as a space in your basement.  By installing shutters or drapery panels directly on the wall, you can immediately create the feeling of being above ground.

Here’s a quick checklist to help you determine which window treatments might work best in your home:

Function.  How is the window being used?  Do you need to block outdoor light? Is privacy your priority? Or, do you have a beautiful view that needs capturing?

Focal points.  Are your windows a natural dramatic architectural feature of your room?  If so, you have a built-in focal point, and should plan your treatments accordingly. If not, a professional decorator can make your window treatments true show stoppers.

Style.  What's yours? Casual? Formal? Traditional? Contemporary? Window treatment designs vary greatly, so think about the ultimate style and feeling you’d like to incorporate into their design.

Challenges.  Are your windows too small? Too large? A unique shape? A carefully designed window treatment can provide a clever solution to the appearance of any challenging window.

When all aspects of the window treatment are carefully considered, the creation of the finished product will enhance not only the window, but your entire room.

We’ll come to you. Call or email me to arrange your in-home consultation.
